Volunteer First Aid Squad members stabilized the victim and took him to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center after the April 9 afternoon attack at the Wayne Motor Inn, Police Capt. Laurence W. Martin said Thursday.
The victim and his roommate arranged to meet Lynn M. McClendon, 24, of Wanaque and four others at the hotel -- although Martin didn't say for what reason.
Once they arrived, "the victim was immediately attacked" by the group, he said.
After beating him, they took his money, as well as silver chains from around his neck, the captain said.
Two badits fled in a white small car and were stopped by Fairfield Police in the Target Department store parking lot, after which they were returned to Wayne, Martin said.
Three others fled on foot behind the hotel on the NJ Transit tracks, he said.
Detectives Jim Faber and Mike O’Rourke arrested McClendon at his home on armed robbery, aggravated assault and weapons charges, the captain said.
He remained held on $150,000 as the investigation continued. More arrests were expected.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Faber: (973) 633-3534.
